International Union of Public Transport - Senegalese Ousmane Thiam has been appointed chairman of the international Union of Public Transport (UITP), a government statement issued in Dakar said.

The statement said Mr. Thiam's appointment was in recognition of Senegal's progress in the transport sector.

Mr Thiam, a civil engineer, has served as the chairman of the executive board of the Senegalese urban transports (CETUD) since 1997.

UITP has 3,400 members in 92 countries.
