Dar es Salaam floods Tanzania – The death toll from the floods following a downpour that pounded Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, for two consecutive days has risen to 13, the state-run TBC television announced late Wednesday quoting local authorities.
The rain left hundreds of the city residents homeless, damaged infrastructure, including power transmission lines and roads besides disruption of business.
In several inundated areas, people took refuge on top of the roofs of their houses from where they were rescued hours later.
Meanwhile, Dar es Salaam regional authorities have reserved temporary accommodation for flood victims in school buildings which were closed for year-end vacation.
Assessment of the damage caused by the unusually heavy rain was yet to be made, but the Tanzania's Meteorology Agency forecast that the situation would ease by Thursday.
