Lagos, Nigeria - Around 15 unidentified corpses were found floating on a river in Amansea, a border town between Nigeria's South-eastern states of Anambra and Enugu, on Saturday, the police said.
Anambra State Police Commissioner Balla Nasarawa confirmed the gory discovery, which was made by some members of the Amansea community who went to fetch water at Ezu River, a source of drinking water for residents of the town and other neighbouring communities.
'As you can see, we are at the scene and we saw some corpses floating on the river. I have contacted my colleague in Enugu since we share the boundary, so that we can carry out a high level investigation into the incident,' the police boss said. 'I don’t know the exact number of bodies, but we have seen about 10 to 15 corpses afloat on the river.”
He, however, denied insinuations in certain quarters that the bodies may have been those of victims of extra-judicial killing by the police.
Interim chair of the Council Area Joy Enweluzor said that none of the bodies had been identified as members of the community and that no member of the community had been reported missing.
