South Africa: Nationwide truckers strike kicks off in SA

Cape Town, South Africa - A nationwide strike by truck drivers affiliated to the South African Petroleum Industry Association appears to have impacted on the industry. The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) declared a strike over the deadlock of wage negotiations with the association.

The other unions supporting the strike are the Motor Transport Workers’ Union and the Professional Transport Workers’ Union.

Workers assembled in various cities and towns on Monday demanding a 20 percent increase over two years, while the association is offering 15 percent.

The unions and the employer organisation were locked in negotiations on Tuesday.

Police confirmed that some  striking truck drivers were injured in Johannesburg on Monday after the police fired rubber bullets.
