Humanitarian aid in Côte d'Ivoire remains priority, ONUCI head says - The Head of United Nations Operations in Côte d'Ivoire (ONUCI), Bert Koenders, said on Monday that humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable populations remained a priority, nine months after the post-electoral crisis that rocked the country.

He said although the security and socio-political situation gradually had improved in the greater parts of the Ivorian territory, 'we should not lose sight of the persistence of major security problems and community'.

tensions he pinpointed during his trips to the country's west and south-western parts.

Mr. Koenders, who was speaking during his trips to the west and southwest of the country, indicated that the contribution of the international community was vital as the link should be established between humanitarian affairs and development.

'Lack of funding for humanitarian assistance could lead to an aggravation of the situation, even a resurgence of new tensions', Mr. Koenders maintained.

Moreover, ONUCI head hailed the visit of the Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and the Deputy Co-ordinator of Emergency Relief, Catherine Bragg and her appeal for asistance for 2012, which stands at US$173 million.
