Security: Nigeria's top police chiefs to meet over terror blasts

Abuja, Nigeria - Nigeria's top police chiefs have been summoned to a meeting in the capital city of Abuja Tuesday to deliberate on the recurring explosions in the northern part of the country and the Federal Capital Territory. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hafiz Ringim summoned the meeting, which will involve Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) of the 36 States of the federation as well as the FCT, and principal officers of the Police Headquarters in Abuja. Police spokesman Yemi Ajayi confirmed the meeting, but did not give details. “Information needed on the matter will be given to you at the meeting by the leadership of the police,” Ajayi said.

The officers are expected to be briefed by Mr Ringim and brainstorm on how to improve security in the country.

The meeting is also expected to deliberate on the offshore aspect of the investigations into last Thursday's bombing of the police headquarters, and to decide on the kind of expertise required to make the investigation comprehensive.

The joint investigation team into the blast, comprising personnel of the Police, State Security Services, Defence Intelligence Agency and other paramilitary agencies, are also expected to brief the Police High command on the extent of its investigations.

Top security source also confirmed that the meeting would approve a new operational order for all the police state commands.

The explosion at the police headquarters, which left eight people dead and 44 injured, has been claimed by the Boko Haram Islamic sect, which is based in northern Borno state.

The Borno State Police Command is expected to also brief the meeting and provide update on the operation against the Boko Haram.
