Security: ACP-EU parliamentarians express concern about Libyan arms

Lomé, Togo - Parliamentarians from the African, Caribbean and the Pacific as well as the European Union (ACP-EU) have expressed concern about the threat posed to the Sahelian region by arms from Libya, in the aftermath of the conflict that led to the fall of Mouamar Kadhafi’s regime.

In a resolution adopted at the end of their 22nd assembly in Lomé, the Togolese capital, they expressed fear that arms from Libya may have found their way into the hands of terrorists.

The parliamentarians also urged the African Union and the United Nations to help end the humanitarian crisis that has hit millions of people who fled Libya for neighbouring countries, including Tunisia, Egypt, Niger, Mali and Chad, during the conflict.

In some of the other decisions at the meeting, the MPs called on the international community to help meet the humanitarian needs in Somalia and the entire Horn of Africa region.

They hailed the European Commission, which plans to give 158 million euros in humanitarian aid to assist the victims of the drought; and the African countries that have promised to give  US$350 million for the same purpose.

The parliamentarians condemned the Al-Shabab Islamists who are hindering the efforts of the humanitarian agencies in the region.
