Paris, France - Ugandan Winnie Byanyima, a human rights activist, has been appointed managing director of the international charity, Oxfam International, official sources told PANA on Thursday in Paris.
Keith Johnston, Director of Oxfam International, said the appointment of Mrs Byanyima was the result of a world process.
“Winnie has imposed herself as the expression of the values and ambitions of Oxfam among a wide-range of exceptional candidates,' he said.
Mrs Byanyima, a specialized engineer in aeronautics, energy and environment protection, graduated in the United Kingdom and worked as an engineer for Uganda Airlines, in Uganda, before joining the diplomatic service in 1989 and representing Uganda in Paris and also UNESCO in the French capital.
She returned to Uganda in 1994 and was in Parliament until 2004. She set up many gender and women's groups
Mrs Byanyima will take office in April.
