Lagos, Nigeria - Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has de-registered seven political parties for failing to field any candidate across the country during April's general elections, INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega announced.
Prof. Jega, who spoke to journalists in the capital city of Abuja Thursday, listed the parties as the Democratic Alternative (DA), National Action Council (NAC), National Democratic Liberty Party (NDLP), Masses Movement of Nigeria (MMN), Nigeria Peoples Congress (NPC), Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP) and National Unity Party (NUP).
He said the Certificates of Registration earlier issued to the parties had been withdrawn.
The action reduces the number of registered political parties in the country from 65 to 58.
