Port Harcourt, Nigeria - Nigerian security officials have confirmed the death of four persons while many others were injured during a stampede at a presidential rally in Port Harcourt, capital of the south south Rivers State, Saturday, PANA reported, quoting the state commissioner of police, Mr. Suleiman Abba.
Witnesses at the Liberation stadium, Port Harcourt, venue of the south-south zonal Presidential rally of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said people rushed to leave the stadium shortly after President Goodluck Jonathan delivered his speech.
The witnesses said the main gate of the stadium was closed by the police and when it was suddenly opened, people trampled upon each other, leading to the death of the four persons.
