Nigeria-UN House bombing: 'Supplier of bomb materials arrested'

Lagos, Nigeria - The man suspected of supplying materials to the Islamic sect Boko Haram to make bombs has been arrested by the State Security Service (SSS), in the aftermath of the 26 Aug. bombing of the UN House in Nigeria's capital city of Abuja, which left 23 dead, the private Vanguard newspaper reported Friday.

It said the arrested supplier, who was not identified, is giving useful information to his interrogators.

The paper said the arrest followed the confessional statements obtained from the arrested members of the sect, Babagana Ismail Kwaljima (Abu Summaya) and Babagana Mali (Bulama).

Both men were said to have also confessed to having taken part in bombings in Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital, and Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, both in northern Nigeria.

The SSS said Wednesday it had arrested two of the suspects in the UN House bombing and declared the third, Mamman Nur, wanted.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is to carry out tests on the bombed UN Complex to ascertain the state of the entire structure.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed announced the plan when he visited the complex Thursday.

Mohammed said the FCT Administration was already working out ways of getting alternative office accommodation for all the United Nations Agencies occupying the bombed complex.

In a related development, the UN said it had yet to be formally informed of the arrests of suspects in the UN house bombing.

“Officially, let me tell you the UN has not been informed about any arrest of any sort nor the identity of those that have been arrested. Therefore, you can understand that I cannot comment on that,” the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Daouda Toure, told journalists in Abuja Thursday.
