Lagos, Nigeria - Consumers in Nigeria are to pay more for electricity as the tariff is due to go up from 1 July, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). NERC said in a statement that under the new tariff, the cost of a kilowatt of electricity would increase from 8.50 naira to 40 naira (US$1=150 naira). 'The marginal increase was approved in 2008 and we have the responsibility to inform the public as part of our commitment to transparency,' NERC said in the statement.
Nigerian consumers will not be delighted at the increase, considering the epileptic power supply in the country.
