Cape Town, South Africa - South African jazz giant Zim Ngqawana, died on Tuesday after suffering a massive stroke, according to a statement released by his family. Ngqawana, whose real name was Zimasile, died at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg at the age of 51. He is survived by his wife and six children. The legend was admitted to the hospital on Monday, the statement said. 'While rehearsing for his upcoming concert at the Wits Great Hall scheduled for Saturday, he succumbed to a major stroke. He was buried according to Muslim tradition Tuesday night at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg,' the family said.
Mixing African folklore and complex jazz arrangements, Ngqawana spearheaded the sound that came to be known as Zimology.
The National Heritage Council (NHC) described him as an icon in folk music. Sonwabile Mancotywa, Chief Executive of the NHC, said “at his age, South Africa and the world still had expectations from Zim. His musical history will undoubtedly remain the heritage of this country.
'We remember him for his excellence and innovation in promoting the people's musical heritage.'
