Kenya: ICC pledges prompt trial of 'Kenya six'

Nairobi, Kenya - The International Criminal Court (ICC) has pledged a prompt trial of six Kenyan leaders, accused of committing crimes against humanity once the charges are confirmed and the case sent to a full trial. ICC Pre-Trial Chamber Judge Ekaterina Trendofilova, said the trial of the six Kenyans would be done promptly to avoid the psychological burden placed on the suspects since they were named by the Prosecutor of the Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo. “The chamber realizes the psychological burden to the suspects,” the judge said during Thursday’s initial hearings to confirm the identity of the suspects. The court has set aside 18 April, for the Status Conference, where a decision on the evidence disclosure would be made.

Six Kenyan suspects, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary Francis Muthaura and former Police Chief Hussein Ali, are expected at the ICC Friday for the initial appearance, where they would be informed of the charges.

During the status conference, each suspect would tell the court the amount of evidence, the volume of paperwork to be presented and the number of defence witnesses to be produced.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects, Joshua arap Sang, has informed the court his rights as a suspect were already violated because the prosecutor failed to interrogate him before the summonses to appear.

The judges promised to hear the alleged breach.
