AfDB lends Morocco US$97m

Rabat, Morocco - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has granted Morocco a US$97-million loan to fund a safe drinking water supply and sanitation project in various regions across the country, the continental banking institution said in a statement made available to PANA here on Thursday.

The loan, approved by the Bank's board of directors on Wednesday, represents 82.3% f the project's total cost, put at US$118 million.

The bank has committed US$5.64 billion to 93 projects in Morocco since it started its operations in the country in 1970.

The approval of the latest loan was informed by the success of the last projects funded by the Bank and their significant contribution to the achievement of Morocco's goals on water supply and sanitation.

AfDB's strategy in Morocco in the period 2007-2011 is focused on three areas: the enhancement of the governance system, infrastructure development and upgrading as well as the promotion of human development.
