Funds hitch hampers ICT development in East Africa

Nairobi, Kenya - Lack of funds for implementing key Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes has been identified as a key factor hampering the setting up of digital villages and access to internet services across East Africa.

This was one of the conclusions drawn at the end of the East African Internet Governance Forum (EAIGF) here Wednesday.

Participants deliberated on the challenges Africa faces in its bid to develop and revamp the ICT sector, more so narrowing the global IT divide.

Michuki Mwangi, an educationist, raised concern over the lack of adequate funds to tackle challenges Africa faces in its digitalization efforts.

He said it was most disturbing to note that Africa's relied on donor funding on ICT development.

Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Executive Coordinator, Marcus Kummer, said the global meeting on issues concerning internet availability and use are very important to the growth of any nation.

He, however, called for the participation of college and university students in such forums as it help them share knowledge and upgrade their skills.

The establishment of national focus and regional groups will help foster the growth of ICT in the country and the whole of the East African region, Ali Drissa Badiel, Senior Adviser, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), told the forum.

The three-day workshop deliberated on ways of identifying and developing more programmes aimed at providing internet access services to the three east African countries - Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
