Zimbabwe inflation soars to more than nine million per cent

Harare, Zimbabwe - Annual inflation in Zimbabwe has soared to an incredible 9.030 million per cent, rising 7.336 million percentage points from last month, a newspaper has reported, citing the government's official statistics agency.

The government has stopped issuing inflation statistics, but the Independent newspaper said it had obtained the latest figures from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) indicating annual inflation was now more than nine million per cent.

The last official inflation figure was released in February, when the CSO said it stood at 165,000 per cent.

No reason was given for the high jump in the inflation rate, but Zimbabwe has been under strain from lack of foreign currency, food shortages and high election-related populist spending by the government in the last three months.

For years now, Zimbabwe has had the highest inflation rate in the world.
