Wade criticises AU's decision on Zimbabwe

Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt - Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has slammed as ''irresponsible'' the decision of the African Union (AU) urging the formation of a unity government in Zimbabwe, under the mediation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

In an interview with the Dakar (Senegal)-based Convergence FM radio, after the AU summit at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the outspoken President said he did not believe much in the solution proffered by the AU's heads of state and government.

"Ii is irresponsible to leave it off as there is no protective measure to avoid the situation from worsening," he said, noting that the situation might degenerate as the Zimbabwean opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, has rejected the mediation of South African President Thabo Mbeki (SADC mediator) while President Robert Mugabe has no intention of making concessions.

There are indications that the proposed solution will not work, after the MDC said it would only accept a unity government formed on the basis of the first round of elections, which it won.

On the other hand, President Mugabe's spokesman, George Charamba, has ruled out any concession to the opposition.
