Vote counting underway in Namibia

Vote counting and verification are currently underway at polling and verification centres across Namibia, after two days of voting which started on Friday, with partial results expected Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Counting at the more than 3,000 polling stations began as soon as polls closed around 2100 hours Saturday.

Officials at most verification centres said results would be posted at the centres later in the day or on Monday.

Results released so far from different polling centres show the ruling Swapo party leading the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress, while other opposition parties have barely registered their presence.

More than a dozen parties contested the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) said about 1.2 million people registered to elect the president and 72 members of parliament.

Polling ran smoothly in most parts of the vast but sparsely populated desert country, and the police, election observers and ECN officials said that no violence or intimidation was reported during the elections.
