United States Secretary of State on 3-day visit to Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, is due here Saturday for a three-day official visit to Tanzania during which she will hold bilateral talks with President Jakaya Kikwete and, in addition, convene a high-level meeting with Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda and Irish Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore to address the objectives of the 1,000 Days Nutrition Project in Tanzania. The global project that involves a range of organizations leads the fight against undernutrition to break long-standing cycles of poor health among infants and their mothers. Clinton will also visit a smallholder farming cooperative at Mlandizi, about 55 km west of Dar Es Salaam.

According to a programme released by the US Embassy here, Clinton’s tour includes a visit to a thermal power plant invested in by US owned Symbion Power with the support of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Two American companies, Symbion Power and Pike Electric, have won a significant portion of the MCC’s compact with Tanzania, to the tune of US$ 206 million, which targets infrastructure investments in the transportation, energy and water sectors.

At US$ 698.1 million, the MCC’s compact with Tanzania is the largest and most ambitious yet, according to the US Government.

In partnership, the two companies are laying nearly 1,600 kilometres of power lines in six regions to provide electricity to over 330 communities previously without power.

Clinton concludes her tour of Tanzania on Monday.
