UNFPA tasks Nigeria on maternal mortality

Lagos, Nigeria - The UNFPA has tasked Nigeria to address its high maternal mortality rate, put at 800 deaths out of 100,000 mothers at birth yearly, in order to hasten its development.

The UN agency's Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Bunmi Makinwa, told journalists in Nigeria's capital city of Abuja Thursday that although successes were being recorded in the area of HIV and AIDS, women empowerment and population, a lot still needed to be done in stemming maternal mortality.

Makinwa called for the mobilisation of resources, personnel and facilities, especially in the rural areas, as part of efforts to tackle the problem.

He said while funding of programmes might be affected by the current global financial crisis, the agency was exploring other means of cooperation and support from other stakeholders.
