UDC opposed to early elections in Cameroon

The Chairman of the Opposition Democratic Union party in Cameroon (UDC), Adamou Ndam Njoya, on Saturday expressed opposition to early elections in Cameroon, stressing that there was no reason to justify its organisation.

President Paul Biya has been inundated by calls from his supporters to hold the election, originally scheduled for 2011.

According to Njoya, a former Foreign Affairs minister, "We hope that this will not happen and that the Constitution will be thoroughly respected."

He charged close associates of the president, planning to seize power through the organisation of early elections, to respect the constitution of the country.

Njoya said "The people of Cameroon has more important things to deal with than an early election -- challenges facing farmers who find it difficult to evacuate their crops, and finding jobs for jobless graduates."

He recalled the 2008 riots in Cameroon, saying "this was one way the people showed discontent for their inability to get good medical care or to send their children to school.

"Such are the concerns that should be urgently tackled."

President Biya, in power since 1984, has effected constitutional reforms that will enable him to run for the presidency as many times as he likes.
