Tunisian Journo jailed for violence against woman

A Tunis court on Thursday sentenced Tunisian journalist, Taoufik Ben Brick, to six months imprisonment after convicting him of "violence " against a woman and destruction of other peoples' property, official sources told PANA.

Brick's lawyer Mokhtar Trifi considered the sentence "heavy", saying he would lodge an appeal after consulting his client.

The journalist was arrested in October following a complaint lodged by Rym Nasraoui Talbi, who accused Brick of attacking her and damaging her car.

During the trial on 19 November, Brick said he was a victim of a trap by the Tunisian special intelligence services.

According to the NGO Reporters without Borders (RSF), Brick's case is a frame-up from state authorities who are afraid of the journalist, well known for his strong criticisms of the Tunisian ruling party.

During presidential elections in October, Brick published a series of virulent articles against incumbent President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

His imprisonment is already causing some tensions between Tunis and Paris as many French parties are demanding his release while the Tunisian government has accused France of "inadmissible interference" into its national and internal affairs.
