Togo: ECOWAS to monitor Togo presidential election

An exploratory mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Togo has expressed the desire of sub-regional body to monitor the 2010 presidential election in Togo, reliable sources told PANA.

The delegation led by Babacar N'Diaye, former chairman of the African Development Bank (AfDB), was received on Tuesday by the Togolese Prime minister, Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo.

The delegation said it was pleased about the mission conducted by ECOWAS during 2007 general elections held 'in very good conditions'.

The ECOWAS envoy said meetings were expected to be held with the political parties, civil society organizations and institutions involved in the election.

He said ECOWAS would be present 'before, during and after the declaration of results'.

The delegation said the mission was expected to assess the needs of the election and how it can help.
