Super Eagles captain says to quit after 2010 World Cup

Football - Nigeria's Super Eagles' Captain Nwankwo Kanu, declared after his team's hard earned 3-2 victory over the Harambe Stars of Kenya on Satu rday that he would quit the game of football after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

'Yes, I think I will surely quit after the World Cup in South Africa next year, because I can't play forever, or when I am 50 years, you understand. But now, I think I have really reached the height and the height is to go to the World Cup . I thank God that finally, the entire struggle, all the fighting and all the hard work, we are finally there," Kanu said.

The ecstatic and joyful team captain was seen running everywhere in the dressing room after the match, shouting, 'I thank you God that we have made it', adding that he was speechless and could only thank God and his teammates for the victory against Kenya and Tunisia's loss in Mozambique which gave his team, the 2010 World Cup ticket.

The Nigerian skipper, however, expressed joy and happiness over his team's victory over Kenya and most importantly Nigeria's qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

'We feel very, very good, not only winning today's match, but for picking the 2010 World Cup ticket,' Kanu told PANA shortly after the match.

'If we look back four years ago (2006), we knew what happened and we don't want it to happen again. Also considering the fact that Nigeria is going to celebrate her 50 years anniversary next year, when the World Cup too would be played, you could see the support from Mr. President (Umaru Yar'Adua) and from all Nigerians. So we have to thank God that we have finally made it.

Speaking on what transpired on the bench when Kenya was leading 1-0, the Portsmo uth FC striker revealed, 'it wasn't something good because there were lots of pressure and we were even panicking that time.

'We knew that we can make it because we were creating a lot of chances and we knew the fact that we also have the players that can deliver. But football is something that you can't really say what is going to happen until the last whistle,' he summed up.
