South African, Japanese gun for UN nuclear agency post

New York, US - South African and Japanese envoys will compete for the po st of Director-General of the Vienna-based UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A statement, made available to UN reporters Monday, said that Japan nominated Ambassador Yukiya Amano, while South Africa picked Ambassador Abdul Samad Minty as its candidate.

Both candidates represented their countries in the last IAEA Board of Governors.

The current IAEA Director-General Mohamed El-Baradei's term of office expires 30 November 30, 2009.

He has served in that position since 1997, and has stated that he is not available for a fourth four-year term.

El-Baradei, an Egyptian scientist, and the IAEA won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in applying nuclear energy for non-military purposes.

According to an IAEA statement, the 35-member IAEA board intends to make the app ointment by June 2009.

The appointment will then be submitted for approval to the IAEA General Conference in September 2009.
