South Africa: Zuma in Trinidad and Tobago for 2009 CHOGM

South African President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, for this weekend's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The Department of Foreign Affairs said President Zuma, who is being accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and the newly-appointed South African High Commissioner in Lond on, Zola Skweyiya, arrived at the CHOGM venue Thursday.

The theme of the 27-29 Nov CHOGM is "Partnering for a more Equitable and Sustainable Future".

The Heads of Government meeting was preceded by the meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers, which ended Thursday.

South Africa rejoined the Commonwealth in 1994, shortly after its first democratic elections, and in November 1999 South Africa both hosted the CHOGM in Durban and assumed the Chair for the next two years.

Commonwealth leaders meet every two years to discuss global and Commonwealth iss ues, agree on collective policies and initiatives.

These summits provide a unique forum for consultations at the highest level of Government, and they are organised by the host nation in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat.
