Senegal: Mine wounds two Senegalese soldiers in Casamance

Two Senegalese soldiers were wounded after their vehicle Thursday ran over a mine in the rural community of Santhiaba Manjacque, near the Guinea Bissau border, 50 kilometres west of Ziguinchor, sources told PANA.

According to sources, the vehicle was hit while criss crossing the different cam ps of Senegalese soldiers located in the area.

The area has suffered most from the conflict in Casamance, from which residents fled to take refuge in Oussouye, Ziguinchor or the neighboring Guinea-Bissau.

The two wounded soldiers were transferred to the regional hospital in Ziguinchor, said the sources, stressing that the mine was newly planted since the road on which the vehicle was hit had been already demined.

The Senegalese government has since 2007, embarked on a demining programme in Casamance but officials of the national anti-mine centre, in charge of implement ing the programme, are experiencing great difficulties to make progress because of the prevailing situation of uncertainty.
