African military schools - The Human Rights Education in Africa (EDH-Afrique) has called for the introduction of human rights education in the military training programmes in all African countries. In a statement, issued Thursday in Dakar, EDH-Afrique, a human rights organization, said that the training programmes, meant for the military and security forces in the continent, should be carried out sustainably.
EDH-Afrique made the call following the death of five student-officers, including a Senegalese, at the Interarms Military School (EMIA) in Koulikoro, Southern Mali.
The Malian Defence Ministry said the deaths were caused by bodily injuries inflicted by the victims’ colleagues.
In its statement, EDH-Afrique expressed “indignation to such unacceptable behaviour', saying that in modern societies, all inhuman and cruel practices should be banned.'
It said Africans should remain vigilant and mobilise well to deal with the numerous cases of inhuman or degrading treatments perpetrated by military or security forces.
