RD Congo: King Albert II to visit DRC 28 June to 1 July

Brussels, Belgium - King Albert II of Belgium will visit the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC) from 28 June to 1 July to attend festivities marking the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of the African country.

According to a statement, issued by the Belgian Royal Palace and made available to the press in Brussels, King Albert II will be accompanied by Prime Minister Yves Leterme, the head of the Belgian diplomacy Steven Vanackere, the Defence Minister Pieter De Crem and Minister of Cooperation, Charles Michel.

In addition, members of regional executives (Brussels, Wallonia, Flanders) and community executives (French, Flemish and German-speaking Communities), will be part of the Belgian delegation that will visit the former Belgian colony.

The last visit of a Belgian monarch to the DRC was in 1985 when King Baldwin went to the former Zaire to mark the 25th anniversary of the independence of the country under the regime of the late Marshal Mobutu Sese Seko.
