Prime Minister of Cape Verde hit by dengue fever

Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Jose Maria Neves, is one of the 14,000 people affected by the dengue epidemic which has so far claimed six lives in the archipelago, official sources told PANA here on Friday.

This was confirmed by the chairman of the Council of Ministers, Janira Almada, who said Neves, down with the ailment, has since stayed off his duties.

Almada, however, pointed that the health condition of the Prime Minister was improving and that he would be back on his desk on Monday.

"His health situation did not require care and the latest medical check-ups and clinical analyses showed there was no need to worry," the spokesperson of the Cape Verde Government disclosed.

The dengue epidemic, hitting the archipelago for the first time, has led to the postponement of several scheduled events, such as the Congress of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, in power), set for late November. The congress has been rescheduled to February next year.

According to the latest statistics, the Cape Verdean health authorities have recorded more than 14,000 suspected cases of dengue, of which 102 have progressed to the stage of hemorrhagic fever.
