ONUCI gives logistic support to Ivorian govt

The deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General in Côte d'Ivoire, Abou Moussa, Monday in Abidjan delivered materials to the Minister of Defence, Michael Amani N'guessan, as part of the logistical support to the redeployment of police officers and gendarmes in the country, UN s ources informed PANA.

The delivery of the materials - 15 tents and 150 mattresses - was the response of the UN operation in Côte d'Ivoire (ONUCI) to a request for support made in May by the Ivorian Ministry of Defence to facilitate the redeployment of 8,000 Ivorian police officers and gendarmes across the territory.

"This materials delivered followed the political agreement reached in Ouagadougou, especially the part relating to the deployment of 8,000 police officers and gendarmes as well as the re-integration of the former combatants," said Moussa.

He said the deployment of police officers and gendarmes was a strong sign of the return to peace in Côte d'Ivoire, adding that ONUCI should continue to work for peace in the country.

Moussa reiterated the support of the mission to the government and the Ivorian people towards the next elections.

As part of the preparations for the election, Côte d'Ivoire finalized the revision of the voters' register on 30 June.
