Nigeria: Six pre-qualified for privatisation of Nigeria's telecoms firm

Another attempt to privatise the state-run Nigerian Telecommunications Plc (NITEL) will receive a boost 16 Feb when the country's privatisation agency opens the financial bid for the acquisition of 75% shares in the firm.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has shortlisted six out of the 14 pre-qualified consortia for the process, following the closure of the submission of technical and financial proposals 5 Feb. 2010.

According to BPE's Head of Public Communications, Mr. Chigbo Anichebe, the successful bidders are Brymedia (WA) Ltd; AF21/ Spectrum Consortium; MTN Nigeria Communication Ltd; Globacom Nigeria Ltd; Omen International Ltd (BVI) and New Generation Teleco-mmunications Ltd.

BPE had published the advertisement for expressions of interest from prospective investors for the acquisition of at least 75 per cent equity in Nitel locally and internationally in July 2009.

The 14 consortia that were pre-qualified paid a non-refundable fee of US$25,000 for access to the data room and bidding documents and executed the confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.

Previous attempts to privatise the former telecommunications monopoly and its mobile arm M-tel, failed.
