Niger to register mobile phone users

Niger's Telecommunications regulatory agency (ARM) on Wednesday asked all mobile phone users in the country to register with it by February 2010.

It said the aim was to combat fraud now being perpetrated through mobile phones in the country.

"We have had many cases of frauds, threats, intimidations, blackmails, abuses and other types of behaviours through mobile phones," ARM Chairman, Mallam Issoufou, said.

PANA recalls that the government, in 2008, promulgated a decree which required all moblile users to be registered. Since then, no phone operator has complied with the rule.

There are four mobile phone operators in Niger -- Zain, Orange, Moov and Sahel-Com.
