Agric budget Burundi - Burundi has raised its allocation to agriculture and livestock from 8% of the national budget in 2011 to 12% in 2012, according to Gervais Rufyikiri, second vice-President of Burundi in charge of social and economic issues.
He said at a meeting in Bujumbura Wednesday that the increase is part of efforts to stimulate growth in the sector.
Mr. Rufyikiri recalled that in 2010, the share of agriculture in the national budget was only two percent (2%).
According to official figures, agriculture employs over 90% of the country’s workforce, while its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated at over 50%.
Agriculture accounts for over 95% of the country’s export earnings, according to official statistics.
