Niger bans private TV, radio station

Authorities in Niger have slammed a ban on the privately-owned Dounia TV and Radio station for broadcasting a statement that called on President Mamadou Tandja to resign from office, the Accra-based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) said in a statement received here by PANA Thursday.

According to MFWA, Daouda Diallo, President of Conseil Supérieur de la Communication (CSC), Niger's media regulatory body, on 29 June banned the Niamey-based independent station.

Diallo reportedly accused Dounia Group, operators of the Dounia Radio and TV, of flouting the CSC's decision and for an alleged “incitement of the security forces to revolt” against the authorities in Niger.

The ban came in the wake of 8 June warning, restricting privately-owned electronic media outlets against broadcasting live discussions on the prevailing political situation in the country.
