NFF acknowledges over-aged players in U-17 team

Football - The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has finally acknowledged reports that many players in the country's Under-17 national team are over-aged, throwing spanners in the country's preparations for the forthcoming 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

An NFF statement said 15 of the 36 players in the team had been dropped after they failed a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) bone scan.

The players were listed as Kabiru Borgo, Abiodun Akande, Ariyo Olubukola, Habeeb Bello, Deji Joel, Yakubu Azeez, Ogungbe Ganiyu, Orji Alu, Justice Chinedu, Chinedu Udegha, Amadi Moses, Solomon Enudi,Dubem Awaziem, Esse Joseph Junior and Olaitan Gambari.

That means only 21 players remain in the team, a number that is totally inadequate to prosecute the World Cup campaign.

Reports in the local press had said only seven players passed the MRI scan.

Nigeria is due to host the age-grade competition from 24 Oct to 15 Nov. 2009 in eight cities across the country.

The host nation faces an uphill task, having been placed with Germany, Argentina and Honduras in the first round, termed the 'group of death'.
