New York-US: Former Ghana president appointed Interpeace chairman

Geneva-based international peace-building organisation, Interpeace, has appointed former President of Ghana, John Kufuor, as its Chairman.

The Pan African News Agency (PANA) reports that the organisation made the announcement on Wednesday in Geneva, capital of Switzerland.

In a statement, obtained by PANA in New York, US, the organisation said that by that appointment, Kufuor would be take over from Martti Ahtisaari, the former president of Finland and the 2008 Nobel Peace Laureate, who had chaired Interpeace since 2000.

It stated that the former Ghanaian leader would assume his position in December.

The statement said that Ahtisaari described Interpeace as an organisation that "enables societies to take ownership of the challenges, the solutions and the peace-building process as a whole''.

It also quoted Kufuor as saying, ``I will work hard to ensure that even more societies, communities and individuals benefit from Interpeace's work."

Founded in 1994 with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Interpeace works with 300 peace builders to implement programmes in 15 conflict and post-conflict zones in 13 countries across the world.
