Namibia's opposition claims voters' register in shambles

Namibia's opposition party, the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), claimed on Thursday that the voters' register was in shambles, raising doubts about the credibility of next week's elections.

RDP accused the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) of ignoring "irregularities" in the voters' register, adding that this was going to damage the credibility of the election results.

The party, which has emerged as the official opposition, said preparations for elections were not going well and called on the ECN to immediately release the voters' register to opposition parties and the general public.

RDP president Hidipo Hamutenya said RDP wanted to know whether the failure to release the voters' register by ECN was "an indication of incompetence or a deliberate attempt to manipulate the electoral process".

The party claimed that repeated efforts to get hold of the voters' register had not yielded positive results.

Hamutenya said the failure by ECN to respond to its written requests "is mind boggling".

The opposition party claims that apart from the lack of clarity on how many registered voters are on the voters' register, there are many ghost voters.

Hamutenya alleged that nearly 30 per cent of the names on the voters' register was not genuine.

The opposition party claimed that the initial number of voters provided by the ECN was 1.3 million.

Hamutenya said at one time the figure went down to 960,000.

Hamutenya said SADC observers in the country should take note of the irregularities on the voters' register.

In addition, opposition parties are also mulling joining forces to challenge the ECN to produce a credible voters' register.
