Mauritanian President urged to uphold neutrality

Mauritanian opposition and others here Thursday called on President Sidi Mohammed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi to play his role as arbi t er in an "impartial" manner.

This followed Abdallahi's broadcast to the nation Wednesday evening, asking some members of the National Assembly who had been at the origin of a motion for cen s orship of the government, to have a change of attitude.

The camp of the initiators of the motion condemned the reaction as one that conflicts with the head of states' role as arbiter.

He should have remained above the confusion in a conflict that opposes two segments of the presidential majority.

The Democratic Forces Rally (RFD), the main opposition party, in a communique ma de available to PANA "deplores the negative position of the president with regar d to the exercise of a constitutional right."

The party considered the threat of dissolving the National Assembly in order to get the members to withdraw their draft motion as "a hindrance to the exercise o f a right, recognised by fundamental law and a serious blow to the democratic process as that is practiced fundamentally in the Assembly."

The RFD communique condemned this "strange" position.

The New Forces for Change (NFC), political supporters of former Prime Minister Zeine Ould Zeidane (dismissed early May) called on the President to be "neutral" a s a "sure arbiter of the republican institutions" and reiterated their support for the initiators of the motion for censorship.

In a press statement, the movement advocated dialogue and consultations with political stakeholders.

It will be recalled that the opposing members are contesting representation in the Mauritanian cabinet with regard to the majority members.

They also denounced the return to office of many of the officials who had served in the Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Tayas' regime (toppled 3 August, 2005).

Supporters of the government accused initiators of the motion of being instigated by army generals that ruled Mauritania under the military transition regime (A u gust 2005 to April 2007).
