Mauritanian Diaspora rejects national dialogue

Nouakchott, Mauritania - An organisation of Mauritanians in the Dispora, Conscience and Resistance (CR), has rejected the forthcoming National Dialogue being organised by the country's military junta to help forge a political transition plan.

In a statement here Thursday, the group said the so-called dialogue was a ploy to legitimise the military junta which took power 6 August 2008, after toppling the government of democratically-elected President Sidi Mohammed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.

The dialogue is scheduled to run from 27 Dec. 2008 to 5 January 2009.

CR called for targeted sanctions against the military authorities, warning that any endorsement of the coup in the country could have a bandwagon effect in West Africa by encouraging an unconstitutional seizure of power.

It said nothing short of restoring the deposed president would be acceptable

A group of parliamentarians opposed to the coup as well as the deposed president have also opposed the dialogue, despite appeals by the leader of the junta - Gen. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz - for all to participate.
