Mauritania celebrates international day for diabetes

Mauritania Saturday celebrated the international day for diabetes with the free screening of potential carriers in the capital, PANA reported from here.

The programme was co-organised by the Network of patients suffering diabetes (RIMALDI) and the Mauritanian network for the fight against diabetes (AMLD).

As a prelude to the celebration, the Mauritanian health authorities held a one-week awareness campaign on the need to carry out a test and, if positive, embark on treatment.

The celebration also marked the beginning of a 2009-2013 campaign aimed at making stakeholders aware of the disease to be able to deal with it.

"Diabetes is today a true problem of public health in Mauritania, but we are mainly facing the problem of being able to treat it," RIMALDI chairman, Wane Al Ghassoum, told PANA.

The general prevalence rate for diabetes - types I and II put together - in Mauritania is 6%.
