Mali: Housing project launched in Bamako

Malian President Amadou Toumani Touré and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Ahmad Mohamed Ali Sunday laid the foundati on stone for 340 housing units, launching the project to construct 20,000 houses in the Malian capital, Bamako, and elsewhere across the country.

The ceremony was held at Tabacoro, located some 15km from Bamako.

The construction of the 20,000 units will be spread over five years and cost 350 billion FCFA (US$700 million), to be funded by the IDB through the Foras International Investment company.

Malaysian, Saudi Arabian, Chinese and Tunisian companies will construct the houses, meant for low and medium income earners

The project also includes the construction of a trade centre, a school, a health centre and a place of worship.

"The success of this project of 20,000 housing units will strengthen the financial institution's arguments to support other projects in member countries of the Islamic community," Ali said.
