Nigeria-Society: Valentine Day turns violent at unilag, two students feared dead

Valentine Day-Nigeria - Unconfirmed report from the Akoka campus of the University of Lagos Tuesday showed that two students were feared killed by gun shots as a gathering described as valentine gist at the frontage of one of the halls of residence turned violent. The alleged incident, which occurred near New Hall and Marere Hall, was said to have been sparked off by an argument among the students who gathered with their female counterparts to celebrate the day.

In a chat with some the students who hurriedly vacated their hall of residences in the afternoon it was gathered that there was an incident late on Monday night as gunshots were heard within the campus resulting in the alleged death of the two students.

However efforts to immediately reach the institutions public relations officer did not yield reports.

Later an information officer attached to the information unit, Mr. Kingrobert Emookpoeru told Daily Independent on telephone that there were no incidents of gun running on the campus to the best of his knowledge.

Emokpoeru who claimed he was on campus throughout denied any incident.

He said: "I was in school throughout up to this morning. Everything was calm, you know students will always play. Some students were playing in front of Moremi Hall making jest of female students dating aristo. That was what happened. We heard the noise, and myself and some security people went there, by the way, our security people don't carry guns. If there was an incident we would have known. Well if you confirm or know the name of the student that died let us know sothat we can look at it. No student died and there were no incident. The noise by student in Marere hall was what attracted our attention," Kingrobert said.
