Libya: Venezuelan president hails Kadhafi's proposal on SATO

The Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, on Sunday called for a total implementation of the proposal by Libyan leader Mouammar Gaddafi, for the establishment of the South Atlantic Treaty Organisation (SATO).

PANA reports that Kadhafi, the current Chairman of the African Union (AU), made his proposal at the second Africa-Latin America summit on 17 September.

The proposal suggested that SATO should be established along the lines of the powerful North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The AU chairman also indicated that SATO's purpose was to serve the economy, development and services and not war, terrorism or hostility.

According to the Libyan Press Agency (LPA), Chavez made his call at the end of the summit of the "Bolivarian Alternative for the peoples of America (BALA)" in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

It said Chavez also suggested that that the proposal would be presented to the BALA Council for a possible implementation, saying the block was under obligation to set up a similar alliance to NATO.
