Nouakchott, Mauritania - The locality of Vassal-Neré, 1,000km South-east of the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, was rocked by two days of protests this weekend over rising cost of living and lack of potable water, PANA reported. Police suppressed the protests and made several arrests.

A coalition of eight opposition political parties has criticised the government for its reaction to the protests, warning that such clampdown might aggravate the protests.
