International Criminal Court says crimes persist in Darfur

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), said on Friday that crimes in Darfur were still continuing, but Sudanese UN diplomats have denied this allegations.

The Pan African News Agency (PANA) reports that Moreno-Ocampo made the statement at an open meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.

He also described the humanitarian situation in Darfur as ``fragile''.

On Sudan's President Omar Al-Bashir, against whom the court had issued an arrest warrant, he said: ``Any leader committing crimes will face justice'', adding that,``power does not provide immunity''.

The prosecutor called on the UN Security Council to support efforts``to end the current crimes against the Darfur people''.

Reacting, Sudanese UN Ambassador Abdalmahmoud Mohammed, denied the allegations made by the ICC prosecutor.

Abdalhaleem told UN reporters that ``this is a big lie'', saying ``Darfur's war is over''.

On Moreno-Ocampo, he said, ``we will charge him with political prostitution''.

In a recent report to the Security Council, the UN Secretary-General said the Sudanese government had limited the actions of the peacekeepers in Darfur.

Also, the UN Security Council had on Monday called for ``full access'' for peacekeepers in the Sudanese region of Darfur as current efforts were being hindered by the Sudanese government.

However, Sudan said that it did not deny any access to the peacekeepers.
