IFAD grants US$ 200 million for rural development in Burundi

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has financed eight rural development projects in Burundi for a total amount of over US$ 200 million, diplomatic sources in Bujumbura told PANA on Monday.

The projects are related to the recovery and development programmes of the rural area, the transitional programme of post-conflict reconstruction and support for the reconstruction of the livestock sector.

The US$ 200 million does not include other grants meant top assist countries emerging from conflicts, Hamed Haidara, the IFAD official responsible for Burundi and the Comoros Islands, stressed.

Burundi is gradually emerging from over a decade of civil war that has literally ruined the national economy and IFAD is one of the few institutions to continue its programme of assistance, the Burundian Minister of Finance, Mrs. Clotilde Nizigama, disclosed.

The most recent project funded by IFAD is that of support for the agricultural intensification and development (Paiva) to the tune of more than US$ 30 million, Hamed said.

At the regional level, IFAD on Monday in Bujumbura, launched a workshop on the implementation of its projects and programmes in Eastern and Southern Africa for four days.

The objective of the workshop is to improve the implementation of projects and programmes financed by IFAD in both parts of the African continent.

A hundred representatives of the Burundian government, heads of projects and programmes funded by IFAD, agricultural and rural development experts as well as officials of the fund will take part in the workshop in Bujumbura and discuss market access, integration of agriculture and livestock as a means of improving agricultural productivity to meet the needs of consumers and fight sustainably against rural poverty.
