Gambian military officers to attend Senegal's National Day ceremony

Thirty-six Gambian soldiers, led by Lt.-Col. Lamin Bojang , Commanding Officer of the Guards Battalion, have left here for Ziguinchor, Sen e gal, to attend the 48th Independence Anniversary Celebrations of Senegal, slated for Friday.

Lt.-Col. Bojang, addressing fellow Gambian officers and soldiers at a ceremony held at the Fajara Barracks shortly before their departure, said "this is the first time members of the Armed Forces are sent to participate in an overseas' parad e ."

He noted that the initiative would also help in strengthening the already existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Captain Alhaji Sanneh, public relations officer of The Gambian Armed Forces, who also doubles as the Military Assistant to Major General Tamba said the leadersh i p of the Gambian Armed Forces had signed a memorandum of understanding with thei r Senegalese counterparts to promote and strengthen the existing bilateral relationship the two countries had been enjoying.

Captain Sanneh described the initiative as a good move and advised the soldiers to maintain a high sense of discipline while in Senegal.

Captain Fatou Jaiteh Baldeh, one of the officers in the contingent, assured that they will measure up to expectation.
