French Schick wins first stage of Burkina Faso cycling Tour

French cyclist Julien Schick on Friday won the sprint of the first stage of the 23rd edition of the international cycling tour of Burkina Faso, which started a few hours earlier in Kokologo, 40 kilometres from Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital.

Schick, of the Team Reine Blanche, rode the first stage of 136-kilometre Kokologo to Boromo course in 3 hours, 1 minute, 20 seconds at an average speed of 45 kilometres per hour, qualifying him to wear the yellow jersey of the competition.

Moroccan Abdelatif Saadoun won the green jersey as the first runner-up, while his compatriot, Adil Jelloul, who won the tour in 2007, emerged the second runner-up.

The first among Burkinabe cyclists, Ouedraogo Rasmané, who arrived in fourth position, took hold of four jerseys: that of combativeness, sub-regional integration, first of the Burkinabe and the youngest cyclist in the race.

In total, 90 riders from 15 African and European countries will compete for 10 days over the 1,276.100-kilometre distance, planned by the organisers.

Cyclist Guy Smet from Belgium, who won the race last year, is in contention to defend his title.
